Retinol is one of the most effective and well researched skin care ingredients you can use. It’s a potent antioxidant that helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, uneven tone and texture, and more. Retinol products can also cause dryness, flaking, and some irritation when you start to use it or if they are used incorrectly. The dry winter months can make skin more sensitive, dry, and dehydrated making retinol use a bit more challenging, too.
One tip for starting Retinol or adjusting your routine in the fall and winter is to try the Retinol Sandwich. Normally, Retinol is applied on clean, dry skin followed by a moisturizer. The retinol sandwich buffers the retinol to help lessen possible dryness and irritation by sandwiching your retinol serum between two moisturizing products.
Simply cleanse and tone your skin and apply a moisturizer. Next, apply your Firm & Lift Serum. Finally, top that with your moisturizer or favorite facial oil. It’s so easy! You may need to try a couple different combinations to see what works best for you and your skin type.
Esthetician Tip: Retinol should not be used on nights when you exfoliate. One of my favorite Retinol sandwiches uses the Anti Wrinkle Moisturizer, Firm and Lift Serum, topped with the Vitamin C Dry Oil.
“If you have sensitive skin and can’t tolerate a retinol, you can use the “retinol sandwich” method to decrease irritation. This involves first applying a moisturizer, then a retinol, followed by a moisturizer.” - Dr. Edward Chen
